In 2007, Jim Hopkins was first elected to represent District V on the Orange County School Board. Mr. Hopkins was reelected to serve an additional four year term in November 2015. District V includes most of the Lake of the Woods subdivision (3,800 homes) plus approximately 50 homes adjacent to the subdivision. In order to keep the residents of District V informed, Jim has devoted a portion of this website to report on School Board issues.

In March 2013 the Orange, Madison and Culpeper school boards sent the governor and state lawmakers resolutions condemning a pair of education bills passed by the General Assembly this session. The school boards all passed the resolution in separate meetings. It expresses "profound disappointment" in the governor and lawmakers for signing off on a pair of education reform bills.

In 2011 the Virginia’s General Assembly passed legislation that would have required 150 minutes of physical education each week for public school students in kindergarten through eighth-grade. While this legislation meant well, it would harm more children than it helps. For example in middle school, if physical education is mandatory, it would mean fewer students will be able to participate in: foreign language, art, band, chorus, keyboarding, technology, remedial and gifted support classes.
